ONE Friday Fights 5 - 2022-02-17
Lumpinee Boxing Stadium, Bangkok, Thailand
This week we’re back up to 12 fights: 9 Muay Thai and 3 MMA.
The main event battle is between Kongklai Annymuaythai and Superball TDED99. Kongklai has already fought in 2023, a loss to Rambolek 6 weeks ago. He is on a two-fight losing streak and has a 3-4 record since the beginning of 2022. Kongklai won several Fighter of the Year awards in 2020 because he put up a 5-0 record including two 140 lb. title wins. Kongklai notes that between the 4 oz. gloves and the quick breaking of the clinch, fists will be important in this fight and Superball’s strength is knees.
Superball also fought 6 weeks ago, a low kick win over PhetUtong. He’s been relatively inactive, as Muay Thai fighters go, in the Covid era. He’s 2-1 in pro fights since the beginning of 2022, and the loss was to Superlek in Rajadamnern Stadium last April. Some of the gap in his pro resume is because in 2021 and 2022 he participated in the International Federation of Muaythai Associations amateur tournaments. He went 4-0 in 2021 in Bangkok to win the 140 lb. gold medal, winning 4 fights in 4 days from December 8-11. Then, in July 2022, he lost in the finals after winning the two previous days to capture the 140 lb. silver medal at the World Games in Birmingham, Alabama.
ONE Muay Thai: Regular fights 3 rounds of 3 minutes, title fights 5 rounds of 3 minutes. Scored on the 10-Point Must System, but judges must declare a winner if the points are even at the end of the fight. 3 knockdowns in a round is a TKO. Elbows allowed, no throws, no grappling. Fighters fight in the 4 oz. MMA gloves instead of boxing gloves. ONE referees tend to break up the clinch almost immediately instead of letting the fighters work out of it.
ONE MMA: Regular fights 3 rounds of 5 minutes, title fights 5 rounds of 5 minutes. Bout scored in its entirety, not round-by-round. Knees to the head of a grounded opponent are legal, soccer kicks are not.
