The Path To Morning Glory Pool
Or risk having your face eaten off by a bear, or your ass trampled by a bison. No, they're not kidding. This was, um... crap, I can't find my map. Some kind of cool geyser with a huuuge mineral buildup around the vent. There's a 1.5 mile path that winds around the southern side of the valley that houses Old Faithful, which my mom and I hiked to see Morning Glory Pool. Apparently, that was her favorite feature when she visited Yellowstone as a kid, so we just had to go. Dad took this opportunity to move the car, which turned out to be fortuitous when a freak thunderstorm whipped up just as we finished the hike. Another shallow hot pool. Grotto Geyser, I believe this one is called. It's two seperate vents, one with a funky semi-circle formation built around it. Closer view of the semi-circular vent. Random hot area that looked cool as it caught the late afternoon light. Ground squirrel! Isn't he cute? Mom and my feet are just barely outside the frame on this one, if that gives you any indication of how close he was. He seemed very comfortable around people. Here he is again, chewing on something underneath a picnic table beside the trail. REMEMBER KIDS, DO NOT FEED THE WILDLIFE. Or risk the wrath of the park rangers, seriously. WRATH. Morning Glory Pool! Very hard to photograph, as there are rails all the way around it to keep people from throwing crap in the pool. It used to be uniformly blue, without that yellow cast around the edges, but decades of people chucking coins and rocks and trash in there has plugged up the internal crevasse and lowered the temperature, causing bacteria to grow. Bad people! This is as wide a shot as I could get without the railings being in the way. Love those cloud reflections.
